The South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra joins the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra to perform a scene from American Indian composer Jerod Impichcaachaaha’ Tate’s Lowak Shoppala’ (Fire and Light) on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m., during an evening of music at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls.
Tate’s Lowak Shoppala’, created as an eight-scene theatric suite for orchestra, children’s chorus and narrator, expresses Chickasaw identity through the medium of modern classical music and theatre. The concept was inspired by BEI Emeritus Fellow, Chickasaw author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Linda Hogan and her poem “Fire and Light.” Chickasaw artist Dustin Mater created the graphic art, Choctaw artist James Wallace designed the lightning and Cara Crawford led the choreography.
