This Workshop is designed to engage participants with a foundational American poet, in this case Walt Whitman, who in 1870 wrote a powerful and insightful essay entitled, “Democratic Vistas.” The focus will be on vocabulary and how and when to use words by writers to create new work. The Whitman Vocabulary Prompt, poems by contemporary poets and the participants’ own work will serve as catalysts for poems as well as the consideration of poetry writ large.
